Piazza del Popolo

Campo Marzio

Bert’s take

Piazza del Popolo is my favorite place in Rome. It is such a majestic place. This was the way into Rome for anyone arriving from the north, and it still feels like a grand entrance, a border almost, when you cross the gigantic gate of the Porta del Popolo. Go into Santa Maria del Popolo on the corner: there are two Caravaggios, and almost never a queue. People-watching at Rosario is fun but a little expensive. Otherwise, just sit at the bottom of the obelisk and enjoy. You can also walk up the ramp to the Pincio, for the view back down over the square and of the Vatican
