I personally prefer arriving at Piazza San Pietro from Via della Conciliazione, with its beautiful perspective on the Basilica. If you come by metro and walk towards the piazza, you will instead arrive through Bernini’s incredible four rows of colonnade. On either side of the obelisk, you can stand on a marked round stone and, from there, see the four rows of columns line up into one. The obelisk itself came from Egypt and stood in Nero’s circus, which is now under the basilica. Before you leave, whether you visit the Basilica or not, you can stop by the Vatican post office to send a postcard, or go to the official Vatican bookshop for a unique souvenir.
